This year’s HotDocs Documentary Film Festival kicked off on Thursday night, and as per usal I have once again managed to snag an all-access pass. And since I am so very, very underemployed at present, I am gonna see as many damn films as I can over the course of the next 10 days.
Yesterday I went to 3 screenings. I saw some NFB shorts in the afternoon (4 in total, all from 30 to 50 years ago), and then in the early evening I saw Cat Ladies which is, as it sounds, a doc about ladies who keep just a few too many cats. The picture above is from this film’s opening credits and, as it turns out, my old Scrabble buddy Jeanette L. is/was the producer of this doc. I ran into her at the sold-out screening and she graciously invited me to the post-screening party. I took my pal Damian to the party, but we ducked out early to catch a 10pm screening of Clubland which is an exposé of Toronto’s hedonistic Clubland Entertainment District. It was a bit frothy, but it was fun to see all the dumb drunk 20-something’s trying to philosophize on camera. They’re just so dumb when all is said and done.
After the 3rd screening Damian (who also has an all-access pass), myself and our pal Nick headed down to the post-screening party for Clubland which was being held at the nightclub This Is London. It was so lame but again… fun to watch the 20-something’s trying to have fun. But how can they stand that music? Is it even music? Do I sound old for saying that? OK time for bed.
