In The Shadow of a Billionaire
Yesterday I stuck to my 3-a-day HotDocs regimen. I saw Inside Hana’s Suitcase in the early afternoon (very moving), and Art & Copy in the late afternoon (very interesting). But then late last night I saw my 9th film so far which is entitled Shadow Billionaire. It’s a great film, and a very fascinating doc about Larry Hillbloom who is the founder of DHL couriers and is/was a multi-billionaire. He lived in the tax-free haven of Saipan (near Guam), but about 10 years ago he disappeared in a mysterious plane crash (on a tiny plane). Only the pilot’s body and one other was ever recovered. However, as soon as he was reported to be dead all these illegitimate kids, from teenage Manilla whores, came forward and claimed to be heirs. Of course the estate executors decided to brush them off, but this local Saipan lawyer fought for the kids and the result is totally captivating. It turns out the deeper you get into this story the more bizzare, freaky, deceitful and sordid it gets. Which all spells “very entertaining”!!!
