Day 5 of HotDocs and I limited my movie watching to just 2 docs yesterday. The first film I saw was a very engaging doc called Intangible Asset Number 82. The film follows the attempts by renowned Australian drummer Simon Barker to track down his favourite Korean musician, who just happens to be a 72 year old shaman. And a Shaman who is regarded by the Korean government as an “Intangible Asset”…. number 82 to be exact.
The second film was an evening screening of The Cove (see pic above). This pic has generated a lot of buzz lately, and it is well deserved. The filmmakers set out to document the horrific dolphin slaughter that goes on every year in Japan. And this slaughter is covered up by government officials, townspeople, police and other high ranking officials. In fact the cover up is so powerful the film team have to resort to James Bond tactics in order to infiltrate the “cove” where this all takes place, and thereby actually document on film what is truly going on. But will anyone listen? Well… the director is being interviewed on CBC as I write this very blog so that’s a good sign.
