Day 7 of HotDocs (not a day of rest)
I saw two more HotDocs screenings yesterday, and although I am fully flushed with film fest fever, the biggest thrill was finally jamming with my new honeycomb gold “fake” Telecaster guitar at band practice last night. It sounds very good, and got a 4 star rating from me bandmates.
As for the films… Broke, in the afternoon was quite good. It focusses on a crusty old Jewish pawnbroker in a poor area of Alberta, and OY! vatta character this schmoe turns out to be. But somehow he’s also a mensch. Film #2 was a bit of of a wash out. Nauru: An Island Adrift dwells on the economic plight of the tiny island of Nauru, but it also fails to give a broader picture to the forces that caused the downturn so you come out of the film thinking “I now have spend a few hours on Google to find out what the hell the whole story is!”
I also made it out to a HotDocs Party just before midnight. It was fun and I managed to get 2 free beers in b4 the comp bar ended. There was lotsa nice scenery at the bash, I met the director of a film I saw (and liked), I exchanged views and reviews about several films, and I also crossed paths with some old pals and got caught up. Whew!
