I ended my HotDocs marathon yesterday (I saw 22 screenings in total) by catching two final afternoon flicks. I saw Prom Night In Mississippi first and then made it across town to get to the 4:15pm screening of the Canadian film Waterlife. Both films were good and I went to see each for different reasons. I saw Waterlife because fresh water is a huge global concern, and this film deals with the cycles of pollution and mismanagement that have plagued our 5 great lakes for the last 300 years. Chilling stuff! I saw the other film - Prom Night In Mississippi, which chronicles the town of Charleston, Mississippi’s first racially integrated prom - cuz I like hearing Southern US residents tawk real funny. Plus it has a significant message about racial equality, compassion and understanding.
And speaking of compassion… I wish there was some being show by Toronto’s Parking Authority. I came out of my second screening to find a $30 parking ticket on my windshield. For being 6 minutes over my time!!! What a shitty ending to a great movie week.
